What you should know before you buy
One of the main differences between RUST and other survival games is that the developers of RUST (FacePunch) allow the modding community to sell their mods. Most other game developers don’t allow anyone to monetise the game. However, FacePunch’s different approach has attracted some brilliant and creative people who have created amazing RUST Mods.
Before you buy any RUST Mods, even from the websites below, there are some things you should be aware of. If you are not careful, you could waste a lot of money and time and have a slue of trouble and headaches. So below, we have listed some things you need to think about before you buy any RUST Mod, including the ones listed on the website below.
Staying Updated
RUST is impressive because it updates every month with new content and bug fixes. However, it’s a problem because it updates monthly, breaking some RUST mods or conflicting with them, creating errors. If a critical mod on your server is broken after the update and the dev is slow to update. You’ll lose a lot of players.
Support
Fast updates are one thing, but getting fast support is another. Sometimes, mods break or conflict with another mod. Sometimes, many community members request a feature, but the developer doesn’t care. Having an active developer who is quick to fix his work or add features is also something you should consider.
Quality Code
If there is one thing we have learned, it is how essential well-written code is. Even the smallest RUST Mods poorly coded can drastically reduce a server’s FPS and cause you issues. That’s why I only buy mods from professional, experienced developers. Something market places style website cannot ensure.
Pirate Sites
The sites below are all legit sellers of RUST Mods. However, there are sites out there that try to resell the same mods. Selling other people’s work is terrible on many levels, but it also means they won’t offer you any support or updates. They will take your money and run, and when the mods break from an update, you’re screwed.
RUST Mods
RUST Mods is the newest kid on the block. However, it takes a different approach than any other RUST Modding websites below. Firstly, they are not a marketplace, so you can’t just have anyone upload a RUST mod without any quality control or testing done.
The RUST Mods have hired full-time Unity Developers who do nothing but build, optimise and update their mods. Their developers are professional devs with decades of experience. So you can be assured of the mod’s quality.
One unique thing about the RUST Mods website is that they have been licenced to sell RUST Merch. So, if you fancy getting yourself a RUST T-shirt or Hoodie, this is a place to do so.
RUST Mod PROs
- Full Time Devs
- Experieced Devs
- 24/7 Support
- Fast Updates
- High-Quality Code
- Optimized Mods
- 100% Compatible
- Throurouly Tested
- Central Support System
RUST MOD Cons
- New store so selection is limited
- Doesn’t Sell RUST Maps (yet)
Umod.org
Umod was the go-to site for all things related to RUST Mods. The main benefit is that the mods are free, the same people created the modding framework, and 90% of all RUST servers use Oxide. However, other modding frameworks that are supposed to be more optimized and perform better have been released.
Umod remains strong but is rapidly being replaced by the other websites mentioned in the article. Quite a few developers have moved over to the new website since they can sell their RUST Mods rather than give them away for free.
Umod.org PROs
- All Mods Are Free
Umod.org Cons
- Abandoned Mods
- Some are poorly coded
- No quality control
- Very little support
Lone.Design
Lone.design is a website created by Lone, who initially set up the site to sell his custom monuments and maps. It then progressed into a full-blown RUST Mod marketplace where anyone can upload and sell their work, including monuments, maps, plugins, configs, and RUST tools.
Lone.Design PROs
- Big Selection of Mods
Lone.Design Cons
- No Quality Control
- Mods Not Compatable
- No Central Support
CodeFling.com
Codefling has risen quickly over the years and has become the more dominant RUST Mods marketplace. It was created by a guy we all know as Death. They have a strong collection of RUST Maps and tools and offer RUST Services like Logo Design, RUST Server set up, etc.
Interestingly, the people behind Codefling have also created a new modding framework, Carbon. Carbon is much more optimized and uses the latest version of C# code, unlike its counterpart, Oxide.
Codefling.Com PROs
- Big Collection of Maps
- Huge collection of Mods
Codefling.com Cons
- No Quality Control
- Semi Central Support
- Mods Not Compatible
ChaosCode.io
Chaoscode.io is a website by K1lly0u. Like RUST Mods, K1lly0u is a professional developer who ensures that all his mods are compatible. He quickly updates his mods and provides support via his website and Discord.
Unfortunately, his website design still needs improvement. It is a forum-style website rather than a shop, and it’s hard to navigate to previous pouches when you need to download the latest update.
ChaosCode.io PROs
- Professional Dev
- Compatible mods
- Central Support Discord
- Regular Updates
Chaoscode.io Cons
- The website Layout is difficult to navigate.
Game4Freaks.io
Game4Freak is the newest kid on the block. It was made by Dana, or VisEntities, as he is also known. All the RUST Mods are free, and he seems very motivated to make more and keep them updated. His website is similar to ChaosCode’s, but it’s more of a forum-style website than a shop.
This makes it quite confusing to navigate where to get the downloads and updates. I am also weary of overly keen developers offering 1,000 of our work for free or on a donation basis. They usually last a few years, then get burnt out and abandon their projects, which is what I feel is happening to Umod right now.
Game4freaks.io PROs
- Free RUST Mods
- Singular Support System
Game4RFreaks.io Cons
- The website Layout is difficult to navigate.
PulseMod.com
Pulse Mod is, by far, the best-looking website. It’s like a real professional-looking online shop, and the design is excellent. Not to mention the subtle touches like the uniform product icons. If the Developer, known as Netch, is this meticulous with his designs, we can only assume his RUST Mods are equally as designed.
PulseMods.com PROs
- Compatible mods
- Central Support Discord
PulseMods.com Cons
- New site with a smaller collection
- Doesn’t sell maps
- We don’t know if the coding is good
Final Thoughts
Each of these websites offers RUST Mods for free or paid. Some are much better than others. The best by far is RUSTMods.com – However, our advice would be to choose either of the sites, but if you use a marketplace-style website like Codefling or Lone.design, then you need to research the developer who uploaded the mod. These sites don’t have quality control; anyone can upload anything and call it a RUST Mod.
